Quinfo Summer Newsletter 2015

Welcome to the latest edition of the 'Quinfo' newsletter. It has been a while since the last update and as always the IT world is changing rapidly.

For those who I haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting or speaking to, my name is Pete Grayer and I’m one of a few new additions to the Quintech team we would like to introduce you to in this issue. Whilst this chapter of my Quintech employment may only just be starting, those of you with very long memories might well remember me from the very earliest days at Quintech. I originally started at Quintech on day 1 back in February 1991 with Charles and Ian Whittaker – that even pre-dates Steve Mabery and Dale Gibbons – it’s great to be back.

We also have three more recent arrivals:

David Brooke - We knew that Dale was always going to be a very hard act to follow but David is already filling those large, and always immaculately presented, boots with some aplomb. He quietly goes about his business in a friendly efficient manner bringing many years of experience to his role as a Field Service Engineer.

Look out for David beating a path to your door when your Printers, PCs, Laptops etc need repair.

James Osbourne - James joined our busy support team a few months ago where I expect many of you have already had cause to talk to him. James has been instrumental in helping launch our new help desk system and is quickly learning all about our clients, their systems and software.

Joanna Smith - Joanna (Jo) has joined the Application Software support desk and is currently busy updating her skills in the various Sage 200 modules. Her helpful 'can do' attitude fits in perfectly with the rest of the department and will further increase our Sage 200 knowledge and capacity.

And me; I originally left Quintech in 2000 as a very fresh faced Customer Services and Installations Manager and I returned as the grandly titled Commercial Manager. My role, whilst wide and varied, is simply to pull together and tighten up some of the existing systems already in place, aid in the project management of our Application Software installations and generally make myself as useful as possible helping the management team at Quintech to ensure we continue offering the same high level of service to our clients we have always prided ourselves in providing.

As part of our Quintech initiation, all four of us “Newbies” were asked to complete a questionnaire containing some of the key questions employers should perhaps ask prospective job applicants - see the sometimes interesting, sometimes disturbing results on our BLOG.

I am sure you will find the topics below both relevant and of interest. Please take a few minutes to read them and do not hesitate to contact myself, Ian or Dom should you want to find out more about any of these topics.

Best Regards

Pete Grayer

Microsoft are about to launch their latest operating system Windows 10 and it’s FREE!

On the 29th July 2015 Microsoft will officially release Windows 10

Microsoft's Executive Vice President of Operating Systems Terry Myerson announced in January that Windows 10 will be free for existing Windows 7 and 8.1 users for the first year. Microsoft also confirmed that the two most recent Windows versions will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 directly.

See what’s new and learn more about the great new features in Windows 10.

Important Note:  please be aware that whilst we have been busy testing Windows 10 on our systems, there are likely to be some compatibility issues with third party software/systems.

So our advice is to please be patient, you have a year to upgrade and please speak to our team here at Quintech before updating your systems so we can advise on compatibility. Microsoft have published useful information here.

Symantec Web Security

We have had a number of clients who wish to add protection to their users web surfing as well as control what sites users can access and when. Symantec have a very good system for this and I have listed the benefits below. Alternatively check out the video:

Watch Symantec Web Security.cloud Overview and Demo.

 Key Benefits

  •     Prevents Web-based threats from infecting your network.
  •     Ensures all Web content (including PDFs and media files) is free from malicious code before it is delivered to users.
  •     Defends against the loss of confidential data and helps enforce regulatory compliance.
  •     Boosts user productivity, ensures compliance, and saves bandwidth by blocking users from visiting inappropriate websites or downloading media files.
  •     Restricts access to certain websites during specific hours and helps protect bandwidth and productivity by placing time and volume limits on Internet use.
  •     Provides data on malware protection and applies usage policy to users outside the corporate network.
  •     Visibility into data on service performance, Web threats and current Web usage statistics.
  •     Eliminates unnecessary investment in infrastructure, reduces burden on in-house IT resources, and delivers predictable costs.
  •     Provides access to a dedicated team of SaaS specialists who understand the importance of service excellence.

Secure Offsite Back-Up

Traditionally in the event of data loss we have always recommended an onsite back-up system where a designated user would insert a tape or attach an external hard drive to back-up data. The reason for this is that in the event of data loss, this is the fastest way of restoring data.

Many clients are now insisting on a back-up of the back-up and cloud back-up especially as back-ups sometimes get left in drawers, safes or not completed when somebody is on holiday.

Quintech's Business Cloud Backup service is a secure, fully automated ‘set and forget’ solution powered by Attix5, ideal for organisations with limited in-house IT resources. Your data is safely stored in our mirrored Tier 3 UK data centre from as little as £20.00 per month - please contact us for a quote: 01684 882700

And finally...

Hopefully we have kept this short and sweet, there was so much more we could have included so to cherry pick the most relevant (and interesting!) articles was not an easy choice. Keep an eye on our blog - it includes lots of relevant information that we hope you find useful and is always the first place we post important information. Please do not hesitate to get in touch by telephone, fax, email, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or even by Post!

Have a cool summer.
