We've all been there. "Updates are ready to be installed to your PC, please click and install updates and your PC will be restarted" How often have you clicked postpone or ignore and not actually gone ahead with the update? It's easy to think that updates don't matter and they are there as a minor annoyance more than anything, but this could not be further from the truth. So why is it so important to carry out updates?
Why Should I Update?
When you consider how nearly everything is stored digitally in this day and age, your documents suddenly seem far more at risk than ever before. Certain malware can actually wipe your documents as well as transmit it from your computer to a remote server.
The NHS hack in 2017 clearly highlights the severity of these kinds of attacks. Confidential information, including private employee information, salary information and patient information.
Updates often contain patches for security or performance issues which can help minimise the risk of being hacked or becoming the victim of a cyber criminal attack. Older software will continue to have the same bugs and exploitable holes in the code that allow hackers and cyber criminals to get up to good. This is made even more serious by the fact that all of these exploitable entry points have generally been made public after the release of updates.
Automatic updates are fantastic as they takes away the responsibility of having to do them manually and also the risk of ignoring them is minimised. However, automatic updates are not always guaranteed to work. Believe it or not, hackers do have the ability to turn off your antivirus software remotely. Additionally, you could face an inside attack and have your antivirus software turned off manually. This could cause serious problems for your business as one of your primary forms of defense (in your antivirus software) is down and not protecting from attacks. This is a great reason to check for the latest updates as you’ll always have peace of mind when it comes to this type of attack.
It's Not All Doom & Gloom
Having the latest updates and software versions is not all doom and gloom relating to cyber attacks, hacking or other negative things! One of the best benefits of updating regularly is that you will have all of the latest and greatest features! New developments in performance and applications within the software could make your working life a bit more productive or even a bit easier and if you don't update to the latest software versions, you won't be able to use all the new and exciting features the developers have created.
We here at Quintech are firm believers in always updating to the latest versions of software - whether that be mobile applications, operating systems for our PC's or our Anti-Virus. We always make sure that we have the latest versions of software to remain as safe and secure as is possible!
