Working from home: ensuring security for the user and the company

Updated: Apr 15, 2020

Working from home has never been easier

We learned from the Government this week about the measures they will take to try and prevent the spread of Coronavirus. It may be necessary for some of us to work from home if we are able to. However, there can be practical restrictions and not all companies have the IT infrastructure in place to enable it. Not to mention home working is not for everyone. You must be a motivated individual to keep focused and resist the temptation to simply watch Netflix!

What are the risks and how can you mitigate them?

In the office, networks are protected against unauthorised access, malware and viruses, but when users are working elsewhere on personal devices, how can they be protected? How can the company network be protected should the user need access to company data in the office or in a cloud environment?

Security measures

There are a number of things a business should consider putting in place. These include:

Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Mobile Application Management (MAM) platforms. These can help to secure remote workers’ data and enforce the company’s security policies. Tools can remotely force data encryption, run malware scans, wipe data on stolen devices, and more.

A VPN and firewall secures all the web traffic flowing through to your network by encrypting it and routing it via an intermediary server.

Securely storing data is essential, but on occasion, things do go wrong. Invest in a backup solution for your data. Having business continuity solutions in place will minimise the risk of user downtime.

Implement managed antivirus solutions. Ensure they operate on devices inside or outside of the office, updating devices independently. An example would be Quintech’s security suite of products – next generation antivirus solutions that are updated in real time using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

What Next?

The key to managing security for remote workers is to establish enforceable security measures right now, even if it requires a small financial investment upfront. After all, cyber criminals are not going to give up any time soon and complacency in this area could be very expensive and disruptive for businesses.

Quintech have been implementing remote working solutions for many years as employers and their staff have been looking for a better work/life balance and flexibility in working hours. We have extensive experience in implementing best practices for our clients by not only providing the best of breed in secure remote access solutions from as little as £10 per month, but also comprehensive security solutions whilst working remotely. We also offer advice to users on how to manage their risk when they are away from the office.

If you would like to discuss your remote working requirements and our range of security products, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Email or call 01684 882700.

Quintech were very helpful in getting all our staff to work remotely from home. Our questions were answered quickly and simply. At a time when the staff were very busy we were never made to feel we were asking for too much. Thank you all for your help.
